Kollywood saw 200 films making it to the theaters in 2016. However, this year 2017 also has several small and big films coming up. Movies in varied genres which promise to be different in terms of content are slated to release this year. Check out the 5 movies which are set to hit the screens this year that cine buffs can’t wait to watch.


The sci-fi flick Endhiran starring Superstar Rajinikanth had taken Kollywood to the next level. Now, a sequel to the project – 2.0 with Akshay Kumar is being made. In fact, the interesting combination of stars has already made it a sensational project among movie lovers. Salman Khan and Karan Johar attended the film’s first look launch some time ago. Interestingly, 2.0 is considered to be the only film in the current scenario which could pose a potential threat to Baahubali. The film was written and directed by S. Shankar, co-written by B. Jeyamohan and produced by Subaskaran Allirajah, founder of Lyca Productions. The film is expected to be released worldwide on 25 January 2018.

Vishwaroopam II

The last song of upcoming trilingual spy thriller Vishwaroopam 2 has been recorded. It is a sequel to the 2013 blockbuster Vishwaroopam. Kamal Haasan tweeted, “For all looking forward to Vishwaroopam 2, I’m personally getting involved to clear the path. Bigger obstacles are out of the way. What’s left is tech and legal.”

Kamal plays a RAW agent in the film. It also features Rahul Bose, Pooja Kumar and Andrea Jeremiah in pivotal roles. The film has music by Ghibran and was simultaneously shot in Tamil and Hindi. It has been dubbed in Telugu as well. The release date is said to be 18th October 2017.

Vada Chennai

Vetri Maaran began working on the script of his dream project – Vada Chennai, almost six years ago, but things didn’t materialize then as the Visaaranai director got busy with other projects. As a matter of fact, it is only in 2016 that the film went on floors with Dhanush as the lead. The audience has set high expectations on this project which is a gangster film. Amala Paul is the female lead in it. It’s definitely a film to watch out this year.


Velai Illa Pattadhari, the 2014 release was a grand success. There was a lot of buzzes when its sequel was announced. The film will have Soundarya Rajinikanth directing the second time with Sean Roldan composing music. The real surprise was bringing in Bollywood actress Kajol for the movie marking her comeback to Tamil industry after two decades. Dhanush, besides acting, is also producing the film and has written the story and dialogues for the film. The film which is also co-produced by S. Thanu will release on 28th July 2017.

Nenjam Marapathillai

It is gothic horror film written and directed by Selvaraghavan and produced by Gautham Menon for Ondraga Entertainment and P. Madan for Escape Artists Motion Pictures. The film features S. J. Surya, Regina Cassandra and Nandita Swetha in the lead roles. Music composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja. While the announcement of Surya and Selvaraghavan teaming up together itself created a huge fizz among movie buffs. Moreover, the teaser of the film exceeded the expectations. Surya’s dialogues in the teaser went viral on social media. The comeback of Yuvan-Selva combination is yet another USP of the film and the songs have already been topping as chartbusters. The movie will be released on 25th June 2017.
